The pact signed with the United States for transfer of critical fighter jet engine technology will drastically increase localised content in future Light Combat Aircraft and create a manufacturing ecosystem that will go a long way towards achieving the quest for self-reliance, top officials aware of the details have said.
The pact to manufacture GE Aviation's F 414 INS6 engines in India was announced during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the US and officials have confirmed that the first sets are likely to be rolled out by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited within three years. The deal is valued at close to $1 billion.
India has managed to extract a commitment for 80% technology transfer for the engines, which will include coating for the hot end of the engine as well as crystal blades and laser drilling technology. This, officials said, is a significant increase from an earlier negotiation in 2012, in which the US side had capped the technology transfer at 58%.
